What is the Senior Class Council?

By Hilary Van Hoose on February 12, 2013

Ever wonder who puts on those senior beach BBQs and dances, puts on alumni events, and a whole lot more? Well, Emilie Winfield, the current intern and fearless leader for the Senior Class Council, described the student org for you lucky readers!

The Org’s History

The funding for the SCC was originally provided by a grant from University Relations, but good budgeting practices and donations will soon allow the Council to use interest from its savings to pay for its own operating costs. Emilie said the goal was to make the Council a “self-sustaining” operation.

The Senior Class Council is part of the Student Slug Connection, which provides opportunities for “student philanthropy [and] for getting students more connected with each other” in order to encourage greater levels of connection when they become alumni. The Connection started about 4 years ago, but Emilie was hired as a coordinator/intern at the beginning of last Fall quarter.

The Senior Class Council has three main goals:

1. Getting seniors more engaged with each other through “unity events” like dances, BBQs, and pint-nights at Woodstocks.

2. The distribution of each year’s “class gift” through scholarships, like the Senior Legacy Scholarship or building monuments, funded by the Senior Legacy Fund (which is made up of student donations). The concept of students giving to other students is especially important to the Council.

3. Building connections with alumni before they even graduate and become alumni in order to facilitate the need for growing support networks. For example, through events like the Young Alumni Networking Mixer.

Events you can attend or volunteer for:

Last year, the Senior Class council hosted a combo pizza night and info session to attract participants. They’re always looking for new ideas. Over this school year, they’re considering several options for events (viz., beach bonfire party, bowling night, laser tag, beach cleanup).

• On Feb 13, starting at 8:30pm, they’re hosting a Senior Hang-out at Woodstock’s followed by a pint-night.

• On Feb 23, Slug-to-Slug will host the Slugfest benefit dance, featuring an appearance by Sammy the Slug. It will be held from 9pm to Midnight at Stevenson College (exact room TBA).
