All over the news, millennials are making a splash in everything from restaurant trends to fashion choices. But if that’s the case, what are millennials doing in regards to their furniture?

Though most generations love to stereotype their members into one specific box, millennials are a generation known to reject all forms of labeling. This means that the millennial style ranges from the far corners of furniture trends; from minimal to eccentric, millennials will have a taste for it all.

Depending on what their personal style is like, you can find pretty much anything when it comes to sprucing up their spaces. Here are six furniture trends you can find among millennials today.

1. Minimal

If you’ve seen any kind of modern design inspiration lately, you’ve likely seen a lot of nothing. Minimalism is a huge trend in millennial furniture perhaps because it takes so little effort. With their lives busy with school and new jobs, millennials may not have the time, or money, to decorate extravagantly.

If anything, they just want the bare bones of what is necessary for a functional and attractive place to live. Many people of this age will opt for cheaper and versatile furniture from stores like IKEA. The minimalist design is easy upkeep and a simple way to make your space look chic.

2. Rustic

In the opposite style of the urban and minimal comes the rustic style. For many millennials that have moved away from home to smaller apartments in bigger cities, they crave the sentimental, rustic vibes from their past. This could be a past reality or an imagined one, but there is something distinctly homey about a rustic style of furniture. You can also see this in the wedding barn trends popping up in the millennial age group.

3. Plush

In some instances, millennials have to settle for minimal furniture even if it isn’t their first choice. To combat this sense of bareness, millennials will choose to dress up their furniture. They use a series of soft blankets, throws, and decorative pillows to spruce up the otherwise minimal furniture.

These often soft and colorful objects add elements of home to the furniture around millennial apartments. They can also be used to add a sense of uniqueness to an apartment that may look similar to everyone else’s. The addition of plush to any furniture can make any place seem like one of a kind.

4. Vintage

Much like the rustic millennial style, vintage and retro furniture have definitely been making a comeback when it comes to furniture trends. Though they may have not been alive at the time, millennials will sometimes crave an idealized and glamorous past even if they haven’t lived it. You can find vintage tables and headboards among other vintage finds like suitcases, glass jars, and much more.

The classic vibes of vintage furniture give off the impression of elegance and adulthood while adding a taste of eccentricity to any space. Vintage furniture allows freedoms of color, texture, fabric, and shapes that don’t exist widely in modern furniture.

5. Multi-use

When it comes to traditional furniture, some millennials don’t even use it at all. Sometimes millennials get really inventive and figure out that they really don’t need furniture in the traditional sense. One popular trend is the absence of a bed frame and headboard altogether. Some others may use stacked crates, suitcases, or boxes to create some kind of bedside table. A small table may function as a desk.

Essentially, millennials are great at turning the things they already have into the things they need. These inventive kinds of furniture can turn into some rather characterizing decor choices you wouldn’t find elsewhere.

6. Monochrome

The monochrome trend mirrors the minimalist trend in that it opts for the “less is more” look. In many cases, millennials are choosing neutral palettes over those bursting with distraction and color. Many millennial apartments are generally whitewashed from their walls to their blankets. Their furniture also mimics this trend as many will opt for classic black or try and stick with one color of wood for their furniture choices. The mixing and matching is becoming less and less frequent among decorators of this trend in millennial home decorating.

By no means is this a comprehensive list of millennial furniture. If anything, you’re likely not to find a millennial who fits one of these categories exactly. Most people will pick and choose their favorites from the many options of furniture that excites them and draws their personal interest.

You could find a minimalist with a taste for vintage, or maybe a rustic who likes multi-use furniture at heart. All in all, the many, many types of furniture await us all and we may as well have a little fun with it.
