Is Key & Peele's TeachingCenter Skit the Reality for Education?

By Alexis Sanchez on March 12, 2016

Okay, so the topic of education in America came up with some friends of mine today and one of them brought up that the show on Comedy Central named Key & Peele tackled this issue in a skit titled “TeachingCenter”. I immediately jumped on us watching it because for some strange reason, I had yet to see it when it was based on such an important issue (plus, I always love some comedy!). I know I was a little late but if you have yet to see the skit too, you can watch it here.

The video strategically uses graphics that rival ESPN’s which I thought was very clever and made me re-look at education in a whole new light. There was a Teacher Draft for the really sought after teachers for schools that needed them, million dollar contracts being the new normal for teachers, and the “Highlight of the Day” was a teacher who encouraged an introverted student to be confident and participate in class. I wanted to high five the Yoast with the Most myself!

What if teachers were seen as valuable and praiseworthy by American society like football and basketball players are? What if teachers received millions for helping their students love learning and actually be able to retain information? What if the roles were reversed? Well, Key & Peele do a great job to give an insight into how life would be like if Americans were as excited about educators as they are about players.

Considering the fact that educators are what shape children into future providers, I find it very odd that education is still to this day not given the proper credit and recognition it deserves. Even if you don’t notice it, everyone is literally surrounded by educators whether in your family, your friends, or at school. Although celebrities and even the first lady herself, Michelle Obama, have raised initiatives on the importance of education, there has yet to be a significant change seen in government spending towards schools and learning.

Education should always be celebrated and talked about, like in this “TeachingCenter” skit. Although this was a comedy skit, it succeeded in bringing humor to an issue and helps you reconsider what is important and what you give your attention to, and making sure they match up. Bravo to Key & Peele for highlighting the importance of education in a nation that needs it!
