Movie Review: Love the Coopers

By Ashton Lineberry on November 17, 2015

If there’s one thing that puts me in the Christmas spirit, it’s Christmas movies. My family has so many great memories thanks to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.”

So, when my family offered to come down to watch the new Christmas movie titled “Love the Coopers” this weekend, I was ecstatic. After all, Christmas is just around the corner and I’ve been dying for it to get here faster.

So on Saturday, the Lineberry family sat down with some warm, buttery popcorn, and watched the worst Christmas movie I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Change the name from “Love the Coopers” to “Hate the Coopers” and you have yourself the correct title. Here’s why I hated the Coopers.

1.) Negative Content

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the type of gal who believes movies should be all sunshine and rainbows, but I do like to feel somewhat happy when watching a movie — especially a Christmas movie.

This entire movie was completely negative until literally the last 10 minutes of the movie. The mother Charlotte was sad, her husband was sad, their children were sad, their grandchildren were sad, even the dog was depressed. The entire movie revolved around divorce, hospitalization, arrests, and unemployment. Talk about Christmas spirit.

2.) Hard to Follow

I’m a pretty smart girl, but let me just say that this plot was everywhere and I got lost multiple times. I didn’t know who was related to who, why things were happening, and I was left wondering about several characters. Needless to say, there were plot holes. Also, the entire movie was narrated, which turns out to be the dog (weird).

3.) Easily Offending

I am not one to get offended. I am open to all opinions and I am far from judgmental. However, there are people in the world who would be offended by this movie. This movie bashes religion, Republicans, soldiers, and overall, happiness. If you have a sensitive family member, be warned.

4.) Unrealistic Ending

So as I mentioned before, the entire movie is completely negative and it seems that there is no hope for anyone in the family. That is until the magic movie fairy swoops down in the last 10 minutes and fixes the entire world. All of a sudden everyone is dancing, the divorces are off, and everyone loves everyone (literally everyone starts making out until the end of the movie). There was no transition between the sad and happy; it was like a light switch.

Overall, this movie did not make me excited for Christmas. It also made me question how I was supposed to get my time and money back. A piece of advice to you all: avoid the Coopers at all costs. Stick to Rudolph and the misfit toys; they’re much happier.
