5 Books You Should Read This Fall

By Elana Goodwin on October 4, 2015

Fall is officially here, and as the weather turns colder, you may not want to venture outside and brave the elements — which means it’s the perfect time to curl up with a good book or books.

Here are five books you should add to your reading list this fall.

1) “The Martian” by Andy Weir. While this sci-fi book was first published back in 2011, the movie adaptation starring Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain just opened in theaters, which means now is a great time to read the book before going to see the movie, which is already garnering praise amongst critics.

Author Andy Weir first self-published the book in 2011, before it was bought by Crown Publishing and re-released in 2014.

The novel is about American astronaut Mark Watney, who is accidentally left stranded on Mars when the rest of his NASA crew are forced to evacuate and leave him behind. Alone on Mars, Watney must figure out how to survive until he can get back home to Earth.

Besides the movie and Damon’s performance earning buzz, the book has also been well-received, with The Wall Street Journal calling it the “best pure sci-fi novel in years.”

2) “Why Not Me?” by Mindy Kaling. The creator and star of “The Mindy Project” follows up her bestselling 2011 book “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” with an even funnier and more Mindy-esque collection of personal essays.

In her second book, Kaling writes about everything from pursuing new friendships to falling in love to attempting to lose weight to believing in herself to meeting actor Bradley Cooper, all in her witty and sharp voice.

She also writes about her relationship with her ex-boyfriend B.J. Novak, her on-screen love interest and once off-screen love interest from “The Office,” with whom she is very close friends today. In fact, earlier this year, it was announced that Novak and Kaling will be teaming up to write a book of essays together, which will no doubt be interesting to read and funny as hell.

If you haven’t already read “Why Not Me?” or added it to your fall reading list, all I can ask is “Why Not Read It?” (Answer: there is no reason — read it.)

3) “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert. The bestselling author of international phenomenon “Eat Pray Love” has written a new inspiring and empowering book you’ll want to put on your must-read list.

“Big Magic” gives you a look into the driving forces and mindset of Gilbert, and she shares her knowledge and perspective on creativity, inspiration, curiosity, fear, and more. She offers advice, encouragement, and empathy, without sounding preachy or holier-than-thou.

Her new book will push you to look at your life and be inspired to be more mindful, more courageous, and more passionate, and show you the path just waiting for you to take to the exciting, fulfilling life you’ve imagined.

4) “Yes, My Accent Is Real: And Some Other Things I Haven’t Told You” by Kunal Nayyar. Nayyar, who famously plays Raj on the critically acclaimed and well-known CBS hit sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” has written a collection of funny essays, much in the style of Mindy Kaling’s first bestseller.

In his book, Nayyar talks about growing up in New Delhi as a little boy and shares stories of his life and journey with the reader from childhood to today, as a successful actor on TV’s most-watched comedy since “Friends.”

His collection of essays allows readers to get a peek at the actor’s life behind the scenes and sheds light on who he counts as his influences, the life lessons he holds dear, his past romantic encounters, and more.

5) “Fates and Furies” by Lauren Groff. Lauren Groff, the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of the “Monsters of Templeton” and “Arcadia,” has written a new highly anticipated novel, which was released in September.

“Fates and Furies” is about marriage, specifically the one between characters Lotto and Mathilde, who have been married for 24 years. Groff writes a complex and layered story, told from the perspective of both spouses, in a prose that is creative and original, that will have the reader hooked.

The book has been nominated for the 2015 National Book Award for Fiction and has been widely praised by critics. The New York Times book review said, “Lauren Groff is a writer of rare gifts, and ‘Fates and Furies’ is an unabashedly ambitious novel that delivers — with comedy, tragedy, well-deployed erudition and unmistakable glimmers of brilliance throughout.”

So get yourself a pumpkin spice latte or some other warm beverage, get comfy, and dive into these five great books you’ll want to read this fall. Happy reading!
