Big Steps for the LGBTQ Community
I think I can safely say that if you haven’t heard the big news, you’re hiding under a rock. Same sex marriage is legal nationwide!!
The earliest case for same-sex marriage was all the way back in 1972, Baker vs. Nelson in Minnesota. After slowly being legalized state by state, in January of this year, we still had 15 banning same-sex marriage. But today it is now legal in every state!
Another big step for the LGBTQ Community happened where I live. Yesterday it was announced that at Montclair State University, as well as The College of New Jersey, Kean, and Rowan, gender confirming surgery will be covered by the school’s Health Insurance Plans.
These schools are joining other New Jersey universities — Rutgers and Princeton — who also provide access for trans-related healthcare. This is a huge accomplishment because these surgeries can be very costly, costing students the freedom of truly being themselves. For some individuals, gender-confirming surgeries are the way they truly come into their own and express who they are physically. I’m sharing this because I think it would be amazing if this could become available at all universities and colleges just as same-sex marriage is legal nationwide.
The LGBTQ Community faces a lot of struggles, but it’s days like these that really make me appreciate it, and the rights we are getting. I hope that you realize this monumental event in history!
