Flash Tattoos: The Latest Trend In Jewelry

By Kristen Peuvion on September 25, 2014

How many of us, as children, loved temporary tattoos?

I remember begging my parents to put one on me when I was too young to do it myself. Then, when I got older I remember putting on not one, not two, but several of the colorful tattoos all over my body.

Basically, if there were more than a couple of inches of bare skin, you can bet that I had a temporary tattoo there. You could say I had a bit of an obsession and I can take a guess that many of you were the same way when you were little.

Well temporary tattoo lovers, it is time to rejoice! Temporary tattoos are back in style.

But not in the way you might be used to. Long gone are the days of temporary tattoos in the form of smiley faces, hearts, cartoon characters and cute sayings. Instead, the latest trend in temporary tattoos is something called flash tattoos and they are well on their way to becoming the hottest fashion trend out there.

These temporary tattoos come in predominantly geometric shapes, which may sound a little boring compared to the temporary tattoos of your youth, but don’t be fooled.

Flash tattoos are meant to resemble jewelry and often come in gold, silver and black. You can wear them as bracelets, anklets, necklaces, etc. or you can wear them on any part of your body if you so choose.

With the growing popularity of this trend, the designs are getting more and more intricate. Designs such as leaves, peacock feathers, Egyptian inspired shapes, words and more are starting to become available.

Whatever designs you choose, though, a set of these temporary tattoos will cost you around $20 to $30 depending on what you want. A set includes four different sheets of flash tattoos with similar designs, making it easy to mix and match tattoos from different sheets.

Now, $20 to $30 may sound a bit pricey for a couple sheets of temporary tattoos considering we’re used to getting them for a quarter or two out of those machines you’d find at the exit of stores, but don’t be so quick to judge.

The whole point of flash tattoos is to resemble jewelry. Considering jewelry can cost you hundreds of dollars for just a few pieces, flash tattoos may be a great alternative. While they are temporary, $20 sounds a lot better than hundreds.

To apply flash tattoos, you pretty much go about it the same way you would any other temporary tattoo. After you’ve decided what flash tattoo you want to wear and figured out where you want to put it, all you need to do is peel off the plastic covering, place it on that area of skin and apply a damp cloth over it for about 30 seconds.

Once you do that, you can pull the piece of paper off of your skin and you will be left with your very own jewelry-inspired temporary tattoo.

Now, since flash tattoos are temporary, you may be wondering what exactly “temporary” means. Does it mean a couple of hours, a couple of days, or what?

According to the flash tattoos website, if all goes well, your flash tattoo could potentially last you four to six days total. In order for you to get the most wear out of your flash tattoos, though, it’s important to take really good care of it and strategically put it on the right part of your body.

The website insists that as long as you keep the flash tattoo out of soap, oils or lotions and put it on a part of your body that is least likely to encounter any of these things, the tattoo should last the specified amount of days. Now, this may be hard, but in the name of fashion, could be doable.

So if you’re longing for the temporary tattoos of your youth, flash tattoos may not be for you. But if you’re looking for a fun update to the temporary tattoos you used to beg your parents for, then give this latest trend a try.

Flash tattoos are the newest jewelry craze. Next time you’re going out with your girlfriends, attending a festival or are just looking for a fun alternative to your normal jewelry, give flash tattoos a try!
